South Pasadena, Arcadia, Altadena, San Marino Child & Family Portrait Photos | 2-1/2-Year-Old Toddler & Yellow Lab Puppy

I had so many favorites from this beautiful family portrait session with Evan, who’s two-and-a-half years old, and Bellbird the two-month-old yellow Labrador puppy that I had to post more.

This last image is probably my favorite photo ever.  I’m in love with the quality of the light, Evan’s bright and irresistible laugh, and Bellbird’s serene countenance.

Alhambra, Monterey Park, Arcadia Family & Child Portrait Photography with 2-1/2-Year-Old Toddler & Yellow Lab Puppy

This family was such a delight to photograph.  We spent a beautiful afternoon with them in a Pasadena park.  Evan and Bellbird are probably two of the cutest subjects ever to be on the blog, and with a two-and-a-half-year-old toddler and a two-month-old yellow Labrador puppy in the same portrait session, we were sure kept on our toes.  I love Evan’s beautiful blue eyes and the matching blue shirt and lollipop.  I love Bellbird’s soft, soft fur.  And I love the joy that this family exuded.  If you missed it, check out the Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena child & family portrait photo sneak peek of Evan and his yellow Lab puppy here!

Chi - Fantastic shots! Favorites are: Evan climbing up the twisted wood/roots, Evan hanging off of said twisted wood/root, and Bellbird and Evan eyeing each other.August 11, 2011 – 1:48 pm

Sophia Chang - A baby AND a dog? That is not easy, sister! I surfed over from your Amazon deal and could not stop browsing. Loving your work :)August 11, 2011 – 12:25 pm

Kim - I really love all your photos with Evan. My favorite is the one of him swinging on the arch, and you captured his joy so skillfully. Beautiful work!June 23, 2011 – 2:12 pm

Evan - Very cute photos. You’re so good with light! The tree trunk was a creative spot to pick. It looks like it would have been difficult to get enough light on Evan’s face there, but you made the photos look amazing! Incidentally, I commend Evan’s parents on the excellent name choice.June 16, 2011 – 4:10 pm

Marci - How adorable is he!! I love the lollypop shot, him swinging from the arched tree/vines and this last one with the family altogether.June 15, 2011 – 5:35 am

Astrophotography at Palomar Observatory | Los Angeles, Alhambra, Monterey Park Family Portrait Photographer

Today we have the third guest post by my resident astronomer, Evan, the other half of Bamboo Shoots Photography.  Check out our other Palomar Observatory astrophotography post and our Los Angeles astrophotography post here!

Two centuries ago, searching for comets was all the rage.  The European well-to-do would try to see who could find the most comets.  As a service to other astronomers, Charles Messier kept a list of fuzzy objects in the sky that did not move from night to night and therefore were not comets.

We took this photo of the eastern sky from Palomar Observatory.  You’re looking right at the center of our own Galaxy, the Milky Way.  It sometimes helps to orient your view of the night sky if you know where the constellations are, so we’ve drawn lines showing pieces of a few constellations: Serpens Cauda (the snake’s tail), Scutum (the shield), Sagittarius (the archer), and the tail of Scorpius (the scorpion).

The Galactic center is a busy place, so there’s a lot of cool stuff in the sky when you look in this direction.  For example, this image contains five Messier objects.

Los Angeles, Burbank, Arcadia, Pasadena family portrait photographer astrophotography from Palomar Hale Telescope / child & baby portrait photographer

Messier 67, and 23 are open clusters, the birth places of stars.  Almost all stars in our Galaxy formed in loose collections of stars like these.  Our own Sun formed in an open cluster, which dispersed billions of years ago.  Some astronomers make it their life goals to find “solar twins,” stars that were born in the same cluster as the Sun.

Messier 8 is also an open cluster, but it contains a nebula.  Nebulae are the Galaxy’s recycling bins.  When some stars die, they blow up into gas clouds.  Pieces of those same clouds can collapse to form brand new stars.  This cycle has been recurring for the last 13 billion years.  Nebulae are also some of the most beautiful objects in the night sky.  If you have binoculars or even a telescope, try to find M8 in the summer evening sky.  You will see the Lagoon Nebula.

My own favorite object is Messier 22.  It is a very tight group of stars called a globular cluster.  Unlike open clusters, globular clusters are not stellar nurseries.  In fact, the stars in M22 are nearly as old as the Universe.  Globular clusters can be somewhat boring because all of the stars are made of almost the exact same stuff.  For example, one star has just as much iron as the next.  However, M22 was very recently found to be an exception.  It’s a very rare globular cluster where all of the stars do not have exactly the same composition.  One of my scientific goals is to figure out why some globular clusters, like M22, show some personality!

Kim - Not only I do enjoy stargazing through Evan’s photos, but the combination of the light on the street, the golden light in the sky, and so many stars is amazing. I love the contrast! Also, thanks to Evan for your astronomical interpretation. Please continue to do more of these!June 23, 2011 – 2:43 pm

May - Very neat!!June 8, 2011 – 6:55 pm

Marci - Beautiful!!! And thank you for explaining in more detail what is happening up there with stars and symbols. Now when I look into the night sky, I will remember to see the “more that is there”!June 8, 2011 – 5:33 pm

Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, & LA Child & Family Portrait Photographer | 2-1/2-Year-Old Toddler & Yellow Lab Puppy

A two-and-a-half-year-old toddler and a two-month-old yellow Labrador puppy.  Can you get anything cuter than that?  Evan is such an adorable, active little boy, and Bellbird the yellow Lab is such a playful, lovable puppy.  We had so much fun running around with them in a beautiful Pasadena park.  This is just a sneak peek of the many gorgeous photos from their family portrait session.  More to come in a few weeks!

UPDATE: Alhambra, Monterey Park, Arcadia child & family portrait photos with Evan and the yellow Lab puppy posted!

Chi - I want to scoop this puppy up! This is a perfect scene, and I love the shadows playing across boy and pup.June 3, 2011 – 1:05 pm

Marci - Oh, how precious!!! Evan must have played hard with the puppy, looks like Bellbird is taking a quick rest. (grin) The little crocs on Evan’s feet are so cute too. I didn’t realize they made them in that size!June 3, 2011 – 6:25 am

Kim - Look at how happy Evan looks! Probably the cutest two subjects you’ve ever posted, and I love how beautiful the light is in the photo.May 19, 2011 – 12:50 pm

Peggy - Can’t decide which is cuter – Evan or Bellbird. He looks so happy and the puppy absolutely indifferent. Wonder which was harder to capture??

The blurred background makes you focus on the boy but then the eye is drawn down to the dog and the sticks, typical boy necessities. Love the composition.

This photo is sure to be a family treasure.May 19, 2011 – 11:49 am

Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank High School & College Senior Portrait Photographer | Post-Processing: Before & After

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post-processing Before & After post, so it’s a good time for another one!  I fully edit all images that show up on the blog and all prints and products that go to my clients.  That way, my clients get their beautiful images looking the best they can.  If you missed the first post-processing Before & After post, check it out here!

Today I’m going to go over an image from one of my Pasadena senior portrait sessions.  Senior sessions are a great opportunity to let your personality shine, and fashion is one perfect way to do that.  I love the orange wrap that this senior wore.  It’s such a striking point of interest for her photos.

Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, LA, San Gabriel Valley high school / college senior photos (junior photos)

All the steps in this post have a standard sharpening that I do for all blog images.  Below is the image straight out of the camera.  As you can tell, she thinks I’m very funny.

Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank, LA high school / college senior photos (junior photos)

Although I liked the photo in color, I really wanted to emphasize the contrast in the photo, and turning it black and white highlighted that contrast well.

San Gabriel Valley, LA, Glendale, Burbank high school / college senior photos (junior photos)

Next I added a bit of extra contrast and warmth in Photoshop to really make the image pop.

Long Beach, Pomona, Torrance, LA, Pasadena high school / college senior photos (junior photos)

Finally, I wanted to draw more attention to her face and make the background less distracting, so I did a little cropping of the sides and bottom.  And this is the final result!

Arcadia, Alhambra, Azusa, LA, San Gabriel Valley high school / college senior photos (junior photos)

Marci - Her laughter jumps OUT at us and brings us into the moment…with her and you. The moment has been captured and expressed beautifully! And contagious…makes me feel like laughing too.May 15, 2011 – 8:02 am

Evan - I love the way you emphasized her face. The contrast between the subject and the background makes it easy to see where you wanted to focus the attention of the viewer, but the spacious background adds some interest and a sense of depth.May 12, 2011 – 1:21 pm

May - Beautiful smile!May 10, 2011 – 9:28 am

Long Beach, Torrance, Pasadena Children’s Portrait Photography | 4th Birthday Party & Kids’ Magic Show

It’s always a treat for me to post about the adorable Audrey and Phillip, and Audrey’s 4th birthday party is no exception.  I can’t believe she’s already 4 years old!  You’ll see from these photos that the kids had tons of fun at this birthday party.  Here’s the birthday girl looking happy and so cute.  She’d picked out the delicious strawberry ice cream cake herself.

They all looked so festive in their party hats.

Here the kids are eagerly awaiting their balloon animals.  I love their excited expressions.  Actually, most of the boys wanted their balloons made into swords, and most of the girls wanted them made into flowers.

Birthday parties weren’t this much fun when I was a kid!  The kids absolutely loved the children’s magic show, and Audrey had a great time being the magician’s assistant.

Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank child portrait photography, kids

The reaction from the kids in the audience was just adorable.  If you notice the two little girls in the back, they’ve laughed so hard they’ve fallen over.

Chi - P.S. The girls who have fallen over are hilarious. Wish I’d been there!June 3, 2011 – 1:04 pm

Chi - These kids are adorable. I can’t believe we’ve already seen them celebrate so many birthdays through your eyes. Lucky you, getting to hang out with them on such a fun occasion.April 25, 2011 – 7:08 pm

Kim - I love seeing how happy the kids are! Audrey and Phillip are growing so fast!April 25, 2011 – 2:50 pm

Evan - Hilarious photos! I had such a great time there that I may as well be 4 years old.April 21, 2011 – 8:58 am

Astrophotography at Palomar Observatory | Pasadena, Glendale, Los Angeles Baby Portrait Photographer Guest Post

Today I’m presenting the second guest post by my resident astronomer, Evan, the other half of Bamboo Shoots Photography.  If you missed our first Los Angeles astrophotography post, check it out here!

I sometimes have the privilege of using the Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory in southern California.  When it was built in 1948, its 200-inch primary mirror made it the largest telescope in the world by far.  I took a short break from my observing to step outside and snap this 30-second exposure of the Milky Way with the telescope dome.  Isn’t the Milky Way gorgeous?  Many of its 10 trillion stars are hiding behind the dark bands, called dust lanes, that you see in this photo.

Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank baby & child portrait photographer astrophotography astronomy night sky at Palomar Observatory

Both of these photos were taken in the middle of a pitch-black, moonless night, so it’s amazing that San Diego’s city lights were able to illuminate these clouds.  Want to help an astronomer?  Turn off your lights at night!

Chi - These photos are mind-boggling. Evan, congrats! I never imagined that with some real skill and patience you could actually capture the night sky without an absurdly specialized astrophotography star-tracking contraption.April 25, 2011 – 7:11 pm

Kim - I always enjoy looking at the night sky and especially the Milky Way, but I usually haven’t had good luck except when camping. These photos are so amazing! (Did the second photo show a shooting star?)April 23, 2011 – 9:48 am

Larry - Truc – Awesome Photos. They remind me of the beautiful photos I used to enjoy looking at so much in the photography books and magazines I used to have.April 14, 2011 – 10:58 am

Peggy - You actually took that second photo in San Diego? Wow! What an awesome site. I don’t live anywhere near a city that large and I’ve never seen so many stars at once. I guess the key to being a great photographer is knowing where to look and how to see what’s really there. Great job.April 13, 2011 – 4:53 pm

Marci - Really great shot of the Observatory against the star-lit sky with the Milky Way…really good! It’s amazing how well it shows up considering you take in the pitch black of night.

The second photo reminds me of being on a farm in the country and looking up into the night sky. Very peaceful feeling.April 13, 2011 – 3:11 pm

Dale - Great jobApril 13, 2011 – 1:34 pm

Dan - That beautiful Milky Way can be observed near the city of San Diego? You’re such a talented photographer! I really like the observatory in the corner of the first photo contrasting with the Milky Way above it. Good work!April 13, 2011 – 12:38 pm

Xiaoting - Yes it is an amazing place!! I sang the song of exiting all the time. I like the first picture!! ^o^April 13, 2011 – 12:13 pm

May - Amazing!!April 13, 2011 – 10:09 am
