Long Beach and Pomona Children’s Portrait Photographer | Post-Processing: Before & After

Post-processing is something I haven’t really talked about on the blog yet, but it’s a critical part of my workflow.  In general, I try not to do too much post-processing to my photos, so that they’ll stay looking natural.

The image I’m going to go over today is one of my favorites.  These two boys were so much fun to shoot.  They rarely stayed in one place long enough for me to get a shot, but for this particular moment they happened to decide—on their own—to show off their new superhero status.  How much more cuteness can you get?

This image was shot indoors with fluorescent lighting.  Below is the image straight out of the camera.  For all the steps I’m showing today, I’ve done a standard sharpening which I apply to all blog images.

I always shoot in RAW so that I have flexibility with adjusting the white balance.  Some photographers adjust the white balance in-camera, but I always shoot with auto white balance and adjust images in Camera RAW if necessary.  I found that when I tried to adjust the white balance in-camera, too often I forgot to change the settings when I changed environments, so using auto white balance was just easier.  With the fluorescent lighting giving the photo a yellowish cast, I did a simple white balance adjustment on the RAW image before converting it to a jpg.

Next, I brightened the boys’ eyes a bit in Photoshop using a layer mask, painting over just the areas I wanted to brighten.  It’s a small thing, but it really draws emphasis on the eyes.

Finally, I added a little extra sharpness, contrast, and saturation.  It’s subtle, but it gives the image that extra pop.  And here’s the final result!

Favorite Lens | Glendale and Long Beach Newborn Baby Portrait Photographer

Before I started photography, I would have thought choosing a favorite lens would be pretty difficult.  Turns out it’s not difficult at all.  Without question, my favorite lens is the Canon 50mm f/1.2.  This baby stays on my camera 95% of the time during portrait sessions.  Maybe more.  I love that it allows me to be close enough to my subjects to interact with them easily, but isn’t so wide that it causes distortion.  I love that it’s light in weight and very manageable.  And I love shooting wide open at f/1.2.  I just love the quality of the light that it gets and the smoothness of the background blur.  It does cost a pretty penny, though, so an excellent bang-for-the-buck alternative is the Canon 50mm f/1.4.

My runners-up favorites are the Canon 85mm f/1.8 (another great bang for the buck) and the 24-70mm f/2.8.  I especially love the latter for vacations, where a zoom lens offers some extra versatility over a prime lens.

Peggy - It’s a big lens but the photos are awesome. Who knew when I bought my Nikon?July 25, 2010 – 8:27 pm

Evan - I like this lens, too. Too bad I have to give priority to the primary photographer. Otherwise, I’d use it for myself!July 20, 2010 – 10:26 am

Proof Boxes | Huntington Beach and Anaheim Children’s Photography

Our gorgeous proof boxes are a fabulous way for you to have all of the images from your session in a lovely presentation.  The boxes are individually handcrafted.  They’re covered with black raw silk and Japanese paper in a beautiful design of silver cherry blossoms.  Along with the box, you get all of the images from your session in 5×7 print, and the prints are coated for protection.

So if you’re looking for an elegant way to store your session photos, this is it!

Marci - Very elegant! It IS a good way to store your session photos and have an attractive box to look at too.July 22, 2010 – 10:42 am

Evan - I really like the pattern on the proof boxes. It’s simple but still attractive. It does not try to show up the beauty of your photos.July 15, 2010 – 2:22 pm
